The Tennessee Reality

Why Tennessee Driveways Don't Stay Smooth

A driveway in Middle Tennessee gets beat up by three things working at once: heavy rain that washes the surface away, clay subsoil that doesn't drain, and the freeze-thaw cycle that pops the top layer apart every winter. Add a steep grade or a ditch that needs to drain across it, and you've got a driveway that turns into a washboard, a pothole farm, or a mud pit by the second spring.

Most of the failures we see come down to the same things: the driveway was never built on a proper base, the crown was never set right so water just runs down the middle, or the drainage at the edges was an afterthought. Once those three fundamentals are right, a gravel driveway will hold up for years.

Here's what we do to make that happen.

What We Build

Driveway Work We Handle

From a fresh suburban gravel driveway to a half-mile rural drive that's seen better days — these four services cover almost every driveway job we get called for.

New Gravel Driveway Installation

Building from raw ground or replacing one that's beyond repair. We clear the path, grade and shape the subgrade, lay a proper crusher-run base, compact it, and finish with a wear layer of #57 or similar. Crowned correctly so water sheds, edged so the gravel stays put.

Done right, this is a driveway that lasts a decade with just minor refresh work.

Driveway Grading & Resurfacing

If your driveway is washboarded, full of potholes, or just sliding out of shape, you usually don't need a full rebuild. We re-grade the surface, fix the crown so water actually leaves the driveway, and refresh the gravel where it's worn through.

Most resurfacing jobs are a one or two day project and bring a tired driveway back to where it should be.

Long Rural & Farm Driveways

Long drives have their own set of problems: erosion, edge washouts, sagging low spots, and ditches that don't carry water like they used to. We do the whole thing — clearing, grading, gravel, edge drainage, and culverts where you need them.

We've worked on rural drives across Williamson and surrounding counties from a few hundred feet to a quarter mile and beyond.

Driveway Entrances & Culverts

The transition from the road to your property is where a lot of driveways fail first. We build clean driveway entrances, install and replace culverts (12-inch residential up to 36-inch heavy-duty), and pour or set concrete aprons where needed.

Sized right for the watershed feeding into them — not a guess.

Not sure what your driveway actually needs? That's what site visits are for.

Real Job, Real Fix

Dave's Garage Extension & Driveway Project

Dave was finishing a garage extension on his home and needed the gravel driveway around the new structure — and the area in front of the house — graded properly so the new and old work tied together cleanly. He didn't just want a contractor; he wanted someone who could explain what the driveway actually needed and why.

We walked the property, talked through the slope, the wear patterns, where water was running, and how the new garage changed the way the driveway needed to flow. Then we graded the gravel — quick, communicative, and done right the first time.

★★★★★

"We added a garage extension to our home, and then hired Excavation Contractors to grade the gravel driveway around it…and immediately in front of the house. Troy's understanding of what needed to be done…and HOW it needed to be done…is what convinced us that he was the guy to use. He was quick, professional, very responsive and communicative…and most important — GOOD. We love the result and still have a lot more work to do on our driveway, and we will definitely be using Troy and Excavation Contractors."

Good Questions

Common Questions About Driveways in Tennessee

How much does a gravel driveway cost in Middle Tennessee?
Most residential gravel driveway jobs in Middle Tennessee range from $3,000 to $15,000 depending on length, width, and how much grading and base prep is needed. A short, flat suburban drive runs at the lower end. A long rural drive, a steep approach, or one that needs a full base rebuild and culvert install runs higher. We'll walk it with you and give you a real number — no charge for the estimate.
How long does a gravel driveway last?
A properly built gravel driveway — meaning a compacted base of larger crusher run with a finish layer of #57 or similar — should last 10+ years before it needs significant work. The top layer typically needs a refresh every 3 to 5 years depending on traffic, drainage, and weather. The base lasts much longer if it was installed right.
Can you fix a washboarded or pot-holed driveway?
Yes. Most washboarded and potholed driveways can be repaired without a full rebuild — we re-grade the surface, fix the crown so water sheds properly, and add fresh gravel where it's worn through. If the base has failed, we'll tell you straight up that a more substantial fix is needed and what that involves.
Do I need a culvert for my driveway?
If your driveway crosses a drainage ditch or low spot — yes, you need a culvert. Without one, water either washes the driveway out or backs up onto the road or your neighbor's property. We size culverts based on the watershed feeding into them and we install everything from 12-inch residential to 36-inch heavy-duty corrugated pipe.
How long does a driveway job take?
A regrading or resurfacing job is usually 1 to 2 days. A new gravel driveway from raw ground — with clearing, grading, base, and finish gravel — takes 2 to 5 days depending on length and complexity. Long rural drives or jobs requiring culverts and drainage take longer. We'll give you a timeline before we start.
