What is a Swale?

Written on:

A swale is a cost effective way to direct water to a drainage area on your property. A swale is a type of ditch that can be lined with concrete, grass, or rock and will often vary in width and depth. The size of the swale is often dependent upon the amount of water diverted and the available space for where the swale is going to be installed.

There are some pros and cons with installing a swale that will have to be considered before moving forward. For instance, the advantage of installing a grass swale for drainage is that, in most cases, it is a cost effective solution that does not require installation of underground pipe. The downside of a drainage swale is that it can be harder to do yard maintenance, making it difficult to mow, weed-eat, etc; and it may erode over time if not properly maintained.
